Beatles Jesus Fiasco!
Jesus became the anti-Beatle on July 26, 1966. That’s because that’s when the magazine Datebook came out with an article and quoted Beatle John Lennon as saying, “The Beatles are more popular than Jesus.”
The quote was actually taken from an article that had been printed months earlier in the London Evening Standard. It didn’t cause shockwaves when it first came out, but taken out of context, this quote became big news for awhile in America.
Overnight asshole DJ’s were telling kids to burn their Beatle records and destroy all your Beatle stuff. I remember I was eight-years-old that year and talking to my brother Jim who was 10-years-old. We both agreed that we liked the Beatles more than Jesus and no way were we destroying our Beatle stuff! I still feel that way today!
In the Beatles Anthology film, Ringo laughs it off and says it was good for them, because a half year later all those kids were buying the same albums they had burned!
Here’s a couple good articles I found on the internet about the whole kit and kaboodle.
This is the original article from the London Evening Standard which caused no controversy in England.
Here’s a good article that includes the cover of the magazine and some sound clips.
And here’s a clip of John Lennon defending what he said:
