Take Two
Listening to and writing about the second song on random CD’s from my collection.
Today’s Take Two:
“No Expectations,” the second song on Beggars Banquet by the Rolling Stones.
I believe (and correct me in the comments if I’m wrong,) that this is the only Rolling Stones song without drums. And what a glorious noise the Rolling Stoners make without Charlie their darling.
I love this song. It relaxingly flows back and forth like a gentle wave with a slide guitar surfing on top of it. And great McCartney-flavored bass by Bill Wyman. The clinkity-clink piano at the end is a nice cocktail counter-blance. Wonderful lyrics as well.
"No Expectations"
(M. Jagger/ K. Richards)
Take me to the station
And put me on a train,
I've got no expectations
To pass through here again.
Once I was a rich man and
Now I am so poor,
But never in my sweet short life
Have I felt like this before.
You heart is like a diamond
You throw your pearls at swine,
And as I watch you leaving me
You pack my peace of mind.
Our love was like the water
That splashes on a stone,
Our love is like our music
Its here, and then its gone.
So take me to the airport
And put me on a plane,
I got no expectations
To pass through here again.

I have fond memories of skipping 1st and2nd hour of school and listening to this record when it came out........while drinking vodka with my pal dave brostrom! This song stuck in my head right off! I remember trying to figure it out while living in Arizona.....Using a bic lighter.......with no knowledge of open tunings! It was without a doubt the song that led me to slide guitar and i still love playing it to this day! I have heard talk that it was ry cooder playing on that but i believe it is brian.........A beautiful contribution from one of most underrated stones! I will shut up now!
of course, the updated lyrics would go something like:
your heart is like a diamond woo-hoo
you make me feel like i got the swine flu.
I have just started a new band called the diamond woo hoo's thanks to biff! a fine name indeed!
