Laura Nyro
Laura Nyro was a great singer/songwriter who’s songs got butchered by bands like Three Dog Night and Blood, Sweat and Tears. I read in an interview that she didn’t care that they ruined her songs, because she got the royalties and didn’t have to worry about becoming a big time star. She was content to pretty much write songs, record and play clubs here in New York City. Some of the hits other people scored with her songs were “Eli’s Coming,” by Three Dog Night, “And When I Die,” by Blood, Sweat and Tears and “Wedding Bell Blues,” by the Fifth Dimension.
She died on April 8th, 1997 of ovarian cancer. She was 49-years-old. I was living here in New York and all kinds of radio stations were playing her songs. Here’s a song that was a big hit for Barbara Streisand, “Stoney End.” And of course her version is vastly superior to Bab’s!
