Bill Murray’s Apology
I remember when Bill Murray joined the cast of Saturday Night Live. I think it was sometime in the second season. When the show started Chevy Chase immediately became the break out star and chose to make movies. Bill Murray had originally auditioned and just narrowly missed out becoming an original Prime Time Player. So when Chevy left, Bill Murray got the call.
I read in a book about SNL that there was big pressure on him, because he was replacing the immensely popular Chevy Chase. I remember when he started he looked nervous and would fumble his lines. I read he got stacks of hate mail from people.
Lorne Michaels told him he should address his problems live on the show and that’s exactly what he did. And it’s amazing to watch this, because you can see the pressure and nervousness leave him. It’s funny to watch this now, because out of all the people that have left Saturday Night Live, he became the most successful, and in my opinion, never really sold out.
Here’s the clip. Happy Sunday, cheers!
